Rosemary Gifford approached Sarah Minnis Design to create the layout for the book she had written documenting her ancestor Sandham Symes transatlantic journey in the 1800's. On meeting with Rosemary she showed us Sandham's sketchbooks, letters and maps, etc which the family had kept safely over the years. These items were so intricate and beautiful that we felt it would be a shame to simply print them as flat images in the book. We wanted the readers to find them as captivating as we did, so felt the best way to show them was to replicate them and place them in their relevant sections throughout the book. Careful attention was taken to make sure paper texture, scale, etc was as close to the real thing as it could be. The result is an engaging read which is housed in a high quality cloth case, printed with foil.
Since publication the book has been mentioned in the Whitehouse blog and has also been presented to the Art Institute of Chicago. On receiving the book, this was their reaction... "It is one of the most complex publishing projects I have seen - the tipped in and cornered plates and texture to the plates and the wedding ring add such richness and texture to the book. It is an elegant volume, which I look forward to reading".
